Iron Hills are alive, with the sound of…

Posted in Beers, Brewpubs by Jon on the October 15th, 2006

There has been mention made of the award winning Russian Imperial Stout from Iron Hill. Luckily, while eating lunch at the Iron Hill in Media, this Bronze medal winner was available for purchase in a 25 oz. corked bottle.  I bought it.  Let me just say that it is a beer with more characters than a science fiction convention.  Sweet, chocolaty, bold nutty finish etc. etc. etc.  To be honest, I would have a hard time finding a complementary food to accompany this beer.  This beer maybe be best served as its own meal.  If you have had a chance to try this beer, please comment below.  Did I like it?…Yes.  Would I recommend it?…Yes.  Is it a type of beer that should only be imbibed once a year?…Yes, because of its loud nature.  Hmmmm…not too dissimilar to Tim.

You should have the imperial stout with a strong beef dish like corned beef, london broil, or sauerbraten. The second recipe is the most tradtional. blaukraut compliments this dish wonderfully. When you drink the bottle (or 2)serve it in goblets between 3 or 4 friends and have a wonderful meal.

Oh man, I am friggin full! Speaking of corned beef, I could totally go for some right now. I wonder what would be the best paring. OK, Dan, your challange is to name the perfect beer for corned beef.

Although I greatly appreciated Jon’s gesture of bringing me home a growler of the Russian Imperial Stout, I have to say it doesn’t make my “Top 10″ list. It’s trying to be too many things, it reminds me of the Iron Hill brew that was soaked with vanilla and brandy. Beer shouldn’t be that busy, it should just be beer. If I were to recommend a local brewery that makes a dark beer the right way, I’d go for the Valley Forge Brewing Company’s Black Lager.
